There are many actors that have the talent to win that most coveted statue; an Academy Award. But for one reason or another these actors have not yet broken through. If I would’ve made this list a few years ago, it would’ve easily been topped by Leonardo DiCaprio. But alas, after several nominations, Leo finally got an Oscar for The Revenant.
That being said, there are still plenty of actors out there that could get an Oscar in the future. Now, I suppose I should mention one caveat: these are just the actors that I feel have the talent to win, but that you might not think of first when it comes to awards season. For that reason this list may seem a little eclectic. Just know it is that way on purpose.
Jake Gyllenhaal is the new Leo in the sense that it’s only a matter of time before he gets an Oscar. He’s already had so many great performances: Brokeback Mountain, Prisoners, Nightcrawler, Enemy, Southpaw, End of Watch, Brothers, Zodiac, Jarhead; the list goes on and on. He’s still young and has plenty of time to win an Oscar before his time is done.
He’s not been doing much acting lately, focusing more on producing and directing. That being said, he was riveting in his most recent leading performance in Pawn Sacrifice. He has had similarly stellar starring roles in Brothers and Pleasantville. My favorite role of his, however, is not in a movie, but a miniseries: The Spoils Of Babylon. It’s a performance that’s so strange, unique, and over the top that it’s somewhat hard to explain. You’d be better off experiencing it for yourself on Netflix. I hope he gets back to serious acting soon, because I would love to see him win an Oscar.
I spoke extensively on why I think Shia LeBeouf is one of the most interesting actors working today in a different post, so I will keep it short here. Quite simply, if he would cut out all of the off-screen tomfoolery and take the right dramatic role, he could easily, at least get a nomination.
Before you laugh and say I’m cuckoo coconuts, hear me out. Adam Sandler has had some amazing dramatic roles in his career. Spanglish, Reign Over Me, and even Big Daddy are much more restrained and realistic performances. Last year, he was even nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy for The Meyerowitz Stories at the Critics Choice Awards. He’s got the chops, and if he continues to do smaller, more quiet, more dramatic roles, he has potential to win an Academy Award.
As I said before, there are many worthy performers that have never won an Oscar. Therefore, this is by no means a comprehensive list. There are way too many talented actors out there that it would be impossible to list them all. Who are some of your favorite actors to never win Oscars? Let me know in the comments below!
